Hello everyone and welcome to my world! leighanna ross desert muscle girl
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and find out more about me, who I am, and what I've done.

I will start at the beginning of when I got involved with athletics at a young age, which led me into the world of bodybuilding/fitness and through this crazy ride that I have been on for most of my life.

Throughout my youth, and to this day, I have never been much of a team sport player. As far back as I can remember I have always preferred 1 on 1 competition or competing against myself. So at the young age of 8 I gravitated towards competitive swimming and continued that on all through high school. During my high school years I broke some school records and also held some state titles in swimming, and to this day my mom still has all my old medals/ribbons/trophies on display in my old room!. While in my junior high years I also got involved in track, another individual sport that I seemed to do well at and

enjoyed. So with all the running and swimming I was doing in high school that laid the foundation for my muscular body and planted the seed for my future physique competitions.

I started casually discovering weight training during my junior year in high school, but only as a tool to help me with my swimming/running. Once I graduated from high school I found myself having a big void to fill in my life now that my competitive swimming/running days were over. I remembered how much I liked the weight training I had done to improve my swimming/running, so I wasted no time in joining the nearest Golds gym and started attacking the weights with a new found intensity to bust my butt trying to make my physique the best that I could.Looking back I can honestly

say that I still have that same fire and intensity to be the best and to look my best now that I did as a young woman just starting out on this journey.

After joining that 1st gym and training for only a short time my athletic genetics started kicking in and a baby bodybuilder was being born before I even realized it! I started getting compliments in the gym from some of the big male competitors, telling me that I should compete and that I have a great look and genetics for bodybuilding. My mind still wasn't ready for that, but my body sure was coming into bloom! Well all the positive remarks and encouragement from other gym members ended up paying off as I finally got on stage, competed in, and won the Carson City Classic. Not bad winning my class and the overall in my first show at only 20 years old. After that first win I was bit by the bodybuilding bug and it was on baby! My next show, the Contra Costa, I got 2nd in my class and that only lit a fire under my ass to come back the next year looking even better and get the win. And the next year I came back even better and won the overall. I tried to ride that win into the Cal state championships, and ended up getting 2nd there. Just as before, that 2nd place lit a fire under my ass to come back better and win. And guess what happened the following year? Yep, I came back better and won the overall. Notice a trend here? I have not won every show I competed in, but when I have not won it has not deterred me one bit, but instead it has motivated me to come back to be even better!

I continued bodybuilding for a few more years, winning some national qualifying shows and trying my hand at getting my pro card at the USA's a few times. I ended up placing top 5 in the USA, but realized I was also at a cross-roads with my bodybuilding. I was not quite big/muscular enough to win the pro qualifiers or compete as a pro, yet I was too big for fitness/figure. What to do? Well I decided to trim my physique down a bit, focus on my conditioning, and try my hand at the Galaxy competitions, which are a mix of physique competitions combined with athletic events like a giant timed obstacle course. This is where my old running training paid off, as I placed 1st in the obstacle course round, top 5 in the routine round, and top 5 in the physique round, earning me 3rd place overall. I was very happy with how I placed my first time out, and very happy with my new "fitness" physique as well. This now started me on my next journey into competing in fitness shows. I love all the types of training that go into competing in fitness, the weight training, the cardio, and the gymnastic/routine practices. Now remember, I swam and ran when I was in school, but I had no formal gymnastic or dance training at all. So I poured my heart and soul into learning the fitness moves and improving my gymnastic skills as much as possible. I am happy to say that the hard work(and moments of tears) paid off when I won my first figure show at the Los Angeles Fitness Classic. From there I tried my hand at the fitness USA's and placed well(8th) but also realized that I was at another cross-roads in my fitness journey. Could I realistically compete and win against women who had a lot more formal gymnastics/dance training that what I had? My gut said no, and I went with my gut and now gravitated toward training for figure shows.

But first I took a bit of a detour and went back to school. Along with my passion for working out I have also always had a passion for the human body, how it works, and how to fix it. I already had my ISSA certification and was personal training people, but I decided to follow that passion even further and started going to medical school. I first got my EMT license and worked as an EMT while continuing my schooling and personal training. School ended up taking up most of my time, which meant less working time and less gym time for me. Well a girl has to pay her bills, so I decided to take a break from school, focus on my personal training, and get back into the swing of things with my own workouts and get my butt back up on stage again!

leighanna ross desert muscle girlTraining for and competing in figure has been a perfect fit for me. It allows me to still train hard, which I will aways love, and it also allows me to maintain a more feminine look year-round which keeps me in shape and allows me to keep up with my modeling shoots and appearances. And of course look good for all of you!

My figure journey is still in progress, but it started back where my bodybuilding journey really took off, at the Contra Costa figure show. And guess what? I once again took 2nd there and then came back the following year to win the overall. I am now riding a wave of 1st place finishes over the last few years, starting at the Orange County figure show, to the San Diego championships, and finally to my last show The Las Vegas Classic in November 2009.

Right now I am taking a slight break from competing and am finishing up med-school to get my degree to be a dr/nurse's assistant. I had 2 years left of school when I took a break a few years ago when I was competing all the time, and I am now half way through finishing 2 years of med-school studies in just 8 months! I should be on target to graduate in August, so please wish me luck you all!
